Head of Department: Mr Wicks
At Abbeyfield we really value languages, recognising both the importance of students being able to speak an additional language and the opportunities it offers them later in life. You can expect fun, interactive lessons, where learning takes place easily as you develop grammar skills and fluency in a language.
Modern Foreign Languages at KS3
In Year 7, students will learn French or Spanish and will develop the four skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing, essential to learning any language. We cover the basics, such as numbers, the alphabet and time, but we also look to promote grammar and literacy in the target language through the introduction of past and future tenses, as well as the present. Our newly re-written assessments, from Year 7 on, closely mirror the skills that are required for GCSE exams in languages.
In Year 8, students will continue to consolidate the work that they have seen in Year 7, but they will also encounter new topics, again built around the themes they will see at GCSE. They will understand grammatical terms more readily, building on concepts and patterns learnt in the previous school year.
In Year 9 students will begin to study content for their MFL GCSE making this in effect a three year course. We feel that the new GCSE has a lot of content and skills that are best delivered over three years rather than the traditional two. Assessments, as in previous years, will display the characteristics and feel of a GSCE examination.
We follow the AQA syllabus and the Themes of study are as follows:
- Theme 1: Identity and culture
- Theme 2: Local, national, international and global areas of interest
- Theme 3: Current and future study and employment
